“Aiki Principles in Aikido” is a seminar on DVD with Saotome Sensei that focuses on what the feeling, intent, and purpose of Takemusu Aiki. He focuses on several insights which are important to realizing the benefits and substance of aikido.

  • The mind thinks with the hands and fingers; stiffening your hands stops the brain.   Research supports this assertion, demonstrating that the brain utilizes  the hands to construct space, form words, and communicate with others.
  • Principles of physics and physiology are the basis for aikido technique.  Saotome Sensei describes the relationship between gravity, momentum, and applied force.  This relates to the spiral movements in aikido that combine absorption, redirection, and extension.  Ukes attack Saotome Sensei and they appear to be  running face first into three-ton feather pillow.
  • Lastly Saotome Sensei stressed that once you know “technique” focus on the “Aiki Principles” manifested in the movement.  My favorite message of the seminar was, “You must be strong but do not forget gentleness….gentle heart, touch, and good effect.” Saotome Sensei said this is “martial wisdom.”

This DVD was recently released by Aikido Eastside in Bellevue, WA.  Thanks to George Ledyard for providing this valuable resource.  There is very little footage of Saotome Sensei so this a great chance to see great aiki insight in action.   Click below for more information.
